TF2 was great when it first came out, but now they ruined it with the cosmetics and weapons that are impossible to get unless you pay money or play a ton of hours.
I haven’t played it in a long ass time but it was really fun, too bad its turned to shit. Seems like almost every game now is pay-to-win.

I played the game since release and have a ton of hours. Maybe its better for new players, but I stopped playing because there was no way to get all the weapons. Not to mention that cosmetics became more important than the game itself, and broke the entire design.
I don’t game too much anymore, but I mostly do emulated games nowadays.
I’ve been going down this list of best SNES games and playing em all, recently beat donkey kong country and super metroid.
Here’s a torrent that contains every SNES game ever made.
There is also a plugin for kodi (used on libreelec), which streams (or downloads) every conceivable emulated rom up until playstation 2 from the archive.org page. This makes it very easy to play all the old titles on your tv. (It installs all the emulators etc. automatically, ps2 gamepads were working out of the box). I was very impressed how easy it was to setup.
For me, a classic is Minetest. Looking back, it wasn’t awesome, but it was great for me at a time when I couldn’t go out and buy the game. And only had a Windows XP machine with 256 MB of RAM or work with.
I still enjoy AssaultCube Reloaded and Tesseract tho.
BOTW is pretty fun!
My favorite is Battle for Wesnoth. Everything is so well put together. Story, graphics, soundtracks, tools to create user content, saving multiplayer games at any time to resume later, stability and reliability.
After that I also like Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup and then SNES games. Most ROMs I played are very buggy and needed custom patches.
Minetest is fun too, but public servers are chaotic and your area will 100% be vandalized if you don’t protect it.
My hardware is too old to play modern 3D games so I don’t keep pace with them anymore.
Mindustry and Shattered Pixel Dungeon. Both are open source.
0AD and Neverball, but I almost never play them. I do play plain old chess on Lichess
Kairosoft management games on Android are absolute steal! For example $3 for Pocket Harvest - a small farm manager - got me like 20 hours of good management fun :)
Right now I’m playing their Pirate manager called High Sea Saga which basically a lite rpg with focus on management.
Smash flash 2, too bad it’s programmed for flash player so I can’t play it on a Linux OS.
It would be nice if they decide to migrate to another platform, for example Godot engine, the game runs on 30 fps because #flash
