“The CEO of Albertina Kerr, the non-profit for the developmentally disabled, learned one of his workers, a mother of five, lived in a tent. Others couch-surfed and slept in cars. Not only did he boost pay by ~50% and start an employee assistance fund, he’s now building 150 affordable housing units.”

I’m a bit concerned that this post might be a bit off topic. While we accept news here, we want to keep it relevant to the libre culture philosophy, which is about freedom and ethics regarding information. Is there something I might be missing?

With 2 mods in this community you might take some time to make the broad/broad/broad description of this community a bit smaller ? ;-)

Haha honestly, that’s a great idea and I was definitely considering it over the past few days. I appreciate your patience, just know that I’m trying my best. When I wrote the sidebar, I deliberately tried to keep it broad and open. It’s my belief that good moderation is minimalistic moderation. Do the least, but do it excellently and only do things that are good for everyone.

Thanks for your swift reply. Thanks for having this community with lots of interesting posts, and thanks for the mod work !

150 isn’t nearly enough.

What is libre culture?

Libre culture is all about empowering people. While the general philosophy stems greatly from the free software movement, libre culture is much broader and encompasses other aspects of culture such as music, movies, food, technology, etc.

Some beliefs include but aren’t limited to:

  • That copyright should expire after a certain period of time.
  • That knowledge should be available to people, not locked away.
  • That no entity should have unjust control or possession of others.
  • That mass surveillance is about mass control, not justice.
  • That we can all band together to help liberate each other.

I’ve looked into the ways other forums handle rules, and I’ve distilled their policies down into two simple ideas.

  • Please show common courtesy: Let’s make this community one that people want to be a part of.

  • Please keep posts generally on topic

  • No NSFW content

  • When sharing a Libre project, please include the name of its license in the title. For example: “Project name and summary (GPL-3.0)”

Libre culture is a very very broad topic, and while it’s perfectly okay for a conversation to stray, I do ask that we keep things generally on topic.
