I clicked the option in it to only see english and it mostly works! How?

It changed in the March 2022 release! Mastodon used to use CLD3 to analyze posts and detect language, but this was slow and inaccurate. Now it uses the user’s interface language. https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/blob/main/CHANGELOG.md#removed-2
Wow, that’s a downgrade for me since I post in two languages and obviously do not change the interface language everytime.
Well, I guess it just tries to match a few words against a dictionary. It doesn’t even need to have the full dictionary, just the must common words like ‘the’, etc.
