    China is being exploited by western billionaires and exists in a world largely dominated by capitalism (a situation that has been enforced through severe global violence).

    Those are literally his arguments for why China is not socialist. Brilliant analysis.

    Serious comment: I can understand why a more dogmatic socialist wouldn’t call China “socialist” – because they have a mixed economy and plenty of capitalists, even though they don’t have much political power (AFAICT) – but calling China “capitalist” doesn’t make sense; the CPC clearly makes choices based on slowly but consistently improving the lives of citizens and strengthening the country against foreign attacks, rather than enriching the “political elite”. How much personal wealth does Xi have, for example, compared to a typical high-level politician in Amerika, or someone like Germany’s chancellor Scholz?
