Mine is the grammar nazi/the person who treats (what are imo) casual online discussions like dissertations.
I know how to write and make convincing points but I’m not gonna sweat that the point I made was a bit broad or that I didn’t capitalize the right thing.
Generally speaking, if you could tell what I meant and still correct or dispute my point with me, that’s my online etiquette pet peeve.
I sometimes hate the anonymity the online world brings. I get that it’s nice for people who can’t say what they want to say irl, but I’m more talking about people that can. For example, on a thread about Finland’s PM yesterday, there were some people describing what they think of her looks or what they’d ‘do to her’. Another example is men (which, let’s be honest, it mostly is with men) that talk about whatever woman they see on instagram and say they could do her or that they could not do her or that she doesn’t look great or whatever.
My point is, these people say shit online they would never have the balls for to say in person, especially not to the person they are talking about. It annoys me sometimes, because these people are not the cool, tough person they think they are.
usually this holier than thou shit is already inherent, working in retail or service will make you realize that either anonymity or personnel that is forced to be nice just makes it apparent (meaning they think like this per default but being in a perceived state of privilege gives them the courage to speak their brain-rot)
I never thought about that but yea it’s probably bottled up anger from customers that they can’t say anything to. If they actually spoke their mind to a customer once or twice they’d be fired immediately and replaced by any lucky participant from the vast reserve army of labor that the US keeps well maintained due to low wages and high unemployment. So basically, not to sound like a broken Communist Record, but the problem is capitalism that makes these people do this online. And alienation.
I take solace in the fact that those weirdos are all Incel-4chan-frequenting-basement-dwellers that luckily will never grow the balls to say this hateful stuff in person.
Some folk just need to put others down to inflate themselves and its sad. It’s ok to have some fun tho if you are coming from the right place and punching up instead of down.
As lame as it is, before being an ML I thought I was an “enlightened liberal” and I read Marcus Aurelius. I didn’t understand that most of his shit is metaphysical and therefore has no REAL reason to it. Anyways, I think he brought up one spectacular point that I still follow to this day:People that piss you off are either A.) (more common) Purposefully trying to get a reaction from you or B.) They are simply ignorant of what reaction they think you may have, that doesn’t excuse the slight, but it puts it into perspective. With that info, the most rational thing to possibly do is to not take anything too personally, because you are either giving satisfaction and completing the task of that person or you are overreacting to someone that doesn’t know what they did and think any reaction is making a mountain of a molehill. Absolutely! I literally joined this site because I wanted to learn more and have nuanced opinions about current and past events in an accurate way. I don’t wanna hear someone say that Stalin was perfect. We’re all comrades here, we can be honest and say he was based af and did way waay more good things for the USSR than mistakes, but ignoring the recriminalization of Homosexuality that was decriminalized only years before, is not a good model to follow. I’ve seen people say, not here but ofc on Reddit, that Stalin was perfect, followed by a sea of comments talking shit about Stalin. I wanna see nuance, I’d like to see Black and White and shades between, don’t say that anyone was perfect, otherwise they would have been leading a paradise. Stalin is just an example but yea basically I dislike super simple takes from people that don’t change their minds
I hate the whole “and so you are a nazi then” or “you are a cop” and the gatekeeping of ML thinking with no explanation when someone disagrees.
It is sometimes justified to warn comrades of known revisions and such things but oftentimes it is just thought terminating, dogmatic, and callous. I think ML thinking is actually a pretty large, broad, and accomodating discourse and so protecting it from dogma is a major responsibility that is hard to achieve when you quickly dismiss comrades. It is best to explain thoroughly and approach conversations as if the other person is speaking in good faith. These message boards are read by more than just posters so its good to keep in mind there is always an audience and acting in good faith is for the benifit of that audience as well.
It is more common online i think although it definitely happens in person. Its hard to reign in the sanctimony for myself too.

Ugh same on that shit! Language is all about conveying an idea. If the idea was conveyed FOH with spelling and grammar, shit’s a little classist anyways. Like I got most of the rules on lock myself but I’m not going to lose respect for someone with poor language skills. What if they’re just uneducated? Or it’s just their style? IRL I have speaking quirks that are a combination of brain damage and just being a fucking weirdo who makes up my own words and pronunciations, so like, sue me lol. I’ve been arguing with my brother about Ukraine for a few weeks now and half of his argument involves pointing out that I’m saying “your-crane” instead of “you-crane,” like I get it I sound like a dumbass but also what about…you know…the content of my arguments lol.

I go hard out of my way to exercise patience, to meet people halfway, to make sure I don’t explain things that can leave people with their pride intact–I think dunking is good for an audience but for individuals it does no good IMO to embarass them or be cruel, and kindness is counter-culture at this point. I know I know, liberals and civility politics, but I don’t want to be polite I want to be kind. i don’t want to be fake nice and smarmy to preserve my moral superiority, I just know I personally responded best when people treated me like a human being when speaking their side. Cruelty, irreverence and dunking all have their places of course.
And then the unwarranted condescension. Like people who can somehow be smug when they are just parroting the most shallow quips. It would be one thing if using expertise and infallible logic you tore me a new one, but people talk to me like some combination of a bratty child, a cockroach, and a heinous monster for trying to dryly recite plain facts while they merely pull one of the random 50 anti-communist talking points everybody and their grandma’s has heard a thousand times.

English doesn’t even have serious rules. I’ve been doing a TEFL course. Like so much grammar and things are totally contrived and don’t actually make sense. Just sort of where you learn by lots of trial and error and everyone has a slightly different system.
So don’t sweat it. Grammar nazis are basically just nazis.
