“Apple Inc on Wednesday removed an app that protestors in Hong Kong have used to track police movements, saying the app violated its rules because it was used to ambush police and by criminals who used it to victimize residents in areas with no law enforcement.”

Is there an open source alternative?

Great question. Sadly, not that I know of, but an open source, easy to distribute apk file could be exactly what the Hong Kong protesters need right now. Sadly, I don’t know how to write Android apps or how to even begin. I suppose I’d use OSM data as a base. Then, have a separate thing that could be used to mark where police are.

f-droid lets you make your own apk repo and even share apks via bluetooth.

Nice! F-Droid is plain awesome. I’m so glad it exists, though I wonder if the HK protestors know about it and use it.

Looks like you can at least view it online HKmap.live

Nice! I didn’t know this! I hope this is good enough.
