I didn’t want to step from the ladder onto a 2.5 story metal roof during a hail storm. How should I feel? I don’t know. I spent a little over half a year working for this company. Been punctual, put forward effort, one of the strongest people on the crew, put in 12 hour days when required. It doesn’t matter. One hot tempered owners son who pisses the day away in his over priced pickup has the final say. The coworkers who didn’t want to do it themselves but did it anyway are more angry at me for refusing to do it than they are at the bosses son for making them do it. I’ll be alright. I’ll find another job that will pay the same. It doesn’t matter tomorrow. I’ve got money enough to cover next months bills, but what can be said. I guess the only answer is to drink and move on
Only put in the minimum effort to avoid being fired.
I respect your point of view. If somebody says to me that a coworker is lazy or is always late or whatever, I say that it isn’t my problem or theirs and try to explain to them why they shouldn’t tie their interests with the interests of their masters.
On the other hand, you want to be respected among your peers. That respect is earned by having a gentle attitude and competency at one’s work.
That said, you should aim for the respect of your peers and not your bosses. There’s nothing worse than someone always trying to impress their bosses. The little that it gains them is outweighed in lost dignity.
Who knows though. Respect even from your peers is overrated. They don’t give a fuck. They’re in the rat race. There’s no solidarity in American labor. It’s all bullshit. They cower in fear of going hungry. The only radicalizing force this country will hear is their own starvation. Not even the starvation of their neighbors can phase them. The American worker knows their place.
The fact the US exists makes me hopefull for my country, because no place in america can be a bigger shithole then the US.
I’m sorry comrade. It’s just a job though. No job is worth your health and safety.
I’ve been there. I got fired a few years ago a month before my daughter was born.
Yeah they don’t care. I’m sorry you had to go through that as well. This was definitely the most dangerous, cowboy, fuck safety jobs I’ve ever had. I really should never have taken it in the first place. I’ve had a few nightmares about dying because of this job. It was a matter of time before something happened or I was fired for not being willing to accept a risk.
I’m mostly disappointed that the other workers were annoyed, and not at the person saying to climb up a very tall ladder onto a metal roof in slippery conditions.
Me too. I covered for them for far less. Today was suicidal. There has to be a line we draw. If you are too afraid to lose your job rather than draw such an obvious line then you’re the fool. Hunger never killed so fast as slipping off a wet metal roof to the death below.
Try not to drink as much. Water is cool though.
Lol I’m already in the process but it’s not chronic. Waters cool af
It probably won’t go no where but file a complaint with the department of labor. Even if nothing happens it’ll show as an event on the record and if he keeps pulling that shit it can prove a pattern in gov records.
Their family owns a lot of the city. The father and I were on good terms. Even though it didn’t save my job. I didn’t want to save my job anyway. The son would have been undermined. It would have escalated and the best case scenario would have been a very unpleasant work environment.
The boss’s wife’s brother owns a big construction company I was all but offered a job at. The older one and I got along well, but the bourgeois are going to stand up for their families and their legacy, even if that legacy is a spoiled child who would have been a prison rat except for his family’s money and connections.
I see your point. I don’t think it would matter if I reported them or not. I think there’s a corruption between these Petit bourgeois types and the local governments. I’ve seen first hand the familiarity between these two spheres. I can almost guarantee that there is not one damn federal bureau that is the least bit concerned with the welfare of the working class. What I do know is that I have to live here in this city that they own and it sure is nice to have an in at some other shit job rather than get blackballed.
That said, if that job offer falls through then I’m going to apply for unemployment and when I do I’ll have to give the reason for my termination.
Yeah… Unless you have some one you can trust to corroborate the claim, there’s probably no other proof of the incident. If for some reason you do have some proof, you want to check out the workers complaint section on the Labor and Industry gov site, I think there is a way to do it anonymously if you want to be vindictive when you’re bored one night and remember this comradely comment. 😎👍
That’s some bullshit man, fuck that. Don’t get lost for too long in the bottle though. Not tryna be Mormon about it but that’s a similar premise to a lot of people I know and their descent…just want you to be good at the end. Best of luck man, good for you for standing up for yourself.
I hope you find a slightly less shit job with decent co-workers :>| Your job sounds exhausting
