Hello! This is my first post on Lemmygrad! I am excited to be here!

I have recently created a Twitter bot with the intent to pull news from anti-imperialist/non-Western sources hourly, ideally to provide a different perspective for people to look into that may color their attitude toward Western media. At the least, it’s a great resource for myself. I would love to have recommendations on sources to add and criticism of my current list.

Current sources I am using:

  • Al Jazeera (Qatar)
  • South China Morning Post (Hong Kong)
  • MintPress News (US)
  • The Intercept (US)
  • Telesur English (Venezuela)
  • The Grayzone (US)
  • MR Online Newswire (US)
  • Asia Times (Hong Kong)
  • Press TV (Iran)
  • Granma (Cuba)
  • People’s World (US)
  • Palestinian Chronicle (Palestine)
  • Nhân Dân (Vietnam)
  • Syrian Arab News Agency (Syria)
  • Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting / FAIR (US)
  • Xinhua News Agency (China)
  • Daily Nation (Kenya)
  • China Daily (China)
  • People’s Daily (China)

Sources I am considering:

  • RT (Russia) - After obvious ordeal is over, too much coverage on it already
  • Sputnik (Russia) - After obvious ordeal is over, too much coverage on it already
  • Pyongyang Times (DPRK) - No RSS feed, have to make way to pull items manually
  • The Global Times (China) - Possibly too tabloid
  • Workers Today (Italy?) - Seems to have more explicit aim toward general Marxism-Leninism as opposed to coverage of anti-imperialist/non-Western affairs
  • Redfish (Germany) - See RT and Sputnik, given this source is related to Russian media
  • China News Service (China) - Afraid I may have too many sources from China
  • Democracy Now! (US) - Possibly too focused on domestic US affairs, but some good criticism appears so unsure

I would love to find more sources covering Africa, South/Central America and the Caribbean, Austronesia, and Indigenous peoples. I have not linked the bot because I am not necessarily trying to self-promote, but would gladly share it if enough interest was shown.

  • Democracy Now hopped on the “Uyghur genocide” bandwagon. Al Jazeera and SCMP both seem very anti-CPC and mostly pro-West (and the former is the type that cuts interviews to make the other party look bad). Doesn’t necessarily mean you shouldn’t include them, of course.

Some independent journalists: The New Atlas (temporarily here) and Multipolarista.

Democracy Now! only came up because there was criticism of NATO. Including some sources like this was actually a point of contention for me to begin with, but I realized some folks may be more open to them and progress from there, especially for the sake of different viewpoints (read: non-Western ones). They haven’t been added because my biggest fear was actually too much focus on domestic US affairs. I’ve had to come up with a lot of filters for this and have been actively removing content that falls afoul of it. The “Uyghur genocide” media obsession has also died off in favor of the “Ukraine genocide” media obsession, and that’s been my biggest headache from these US-based sources…filtering out US State Dept./CIA/NATO talking points being parroted.

Al Jazeera generally struck me as more neutral, but they’ve definitely been on the defensive at points against accusations of anti-Americanism. They’re just kind of the biggest go-to when people ask me for starting points of non-Western media. SCMP also has anti-CPC content at times, but I’ve seen some different perspectives provided that are worth entertaining. Anything that falls too critical on certain subjects gets yanked, as I “practice what I preach” and read the timeline daily myself.

I will definitely check out The New Atlas, and I’ve heard of Multipolarista and seen some of their stuff published in the MR Online Newswire, so yet another good source I’ve managed to overlook several times!

Same here, although he seems a bit less deep diving recently compared to usual. Or maybe it’s just me…

Also found other good ones through the JD show like Jackson Hinkle and Revolutionary Blackout Network. Both are definitely anti-imperialist although they are still fairly Western.

All of these are great, but Dongsheng looks perfect! I’ve also checked out Consortium News prior to the Ukraine conflict, namely when they had syndicated coverage of the Jack Matlock article on how the entire situation was avoidable and instigated by the West, but completely forgot about them. I will definitely check the others out a little more in-depth. As for reactionary/conspiracy-leaning stuff, I literally yanked a Grayzone piece off the timeline from Christian Parenti that was reactionary as fuck regarding COVID measures, and even parroted vaccination conspiracy nonsense. Kind of disappointed in him, and Grayzone has published some stuff leaning that direction too, but I’m no stranger to filtering…one of the worst offenders is surprisingly having to filter out coverage of Western sports like soccer/football. Press TV links were just those for a minute lmao.

I am generally avoiding YouTube, per here.

Someone else mentioned Multipolarista, and I can’t believe I kept overlooking it!

CGTN: Chinese state TV for international audiences in english, has a youtube channel

TheNewAtlas: Exposes US meddling around the world, has a channel on youtube and odysee

Al Mayadeen: English language arab media channel, has an antiimperialist, prosyria and proiran editorial line

I don’t know how Al Mayadeen slipped my mind, thank you! As for the others, I’m generally trying to avoid YouTube for two reasons:

      1. People engage written stories on a different level, they can do so silently or at the headline level and skim from there. YouTube videos are not as accessible in this way, such as during school, work, etc.
      2. YouTube has shown it has no qualms with removing sources of “enemies of the state” lately. I don’t go as far as to call it “censorship,” because the word is meaningless now, but it’s definitely not a great place to be at.

I’ve enjoyed what I’ve seen of Redfish. The only reason I’ve avoided it for the time being is due to the sheer amount of Ukraine posting on the Internet right now and not feeling the need to police content on such a Western-dominated platform in tense times. Every time I see some shit about Russian censorship though, I feel the urge to add these sources in anyway.

I see “tabloid” associated with the Global Times, I am not well-read on them, but can you explain or assuage me at all perhaps?

Every source is going to have some degree of bias, and I’m expecting folks to have a fair amount of skepticism aboard their faculties when engaging them. Really, if it gets them reading anything else, then good.

This is more of a blog/news commentary but I’m not seeing The Moon of Alabama on here.

    For Brazil:

Amazing source with great analysis. They don’t release articles very often but when they do, it is an absolute banger. Severely underrated.

    From their page:

Since its foundation in August 2014, Brasil Wire has worked in partnership with platforms and organisations such as Survival International, Le Monde Diplomatique, Progressive International, Al Jazeera, Revista Fórum, The Michael Brooks Show, FAIR, Counterpunch, Tribune, Outras Palavras, TeleSUR, Brasil de Fato, COHA, NACLA, This is Hell!, New Socialist, UpsideDownWorld and Alborada.

We generally support all progressive Brazilian political parties. We also work in solidarity with social movements such as the MST, CMP, FLM, UNMP, MTST and MNLM, and the Brazilian labor unions and labor union federations such as CUT, CTB, UGT and CONLUTAS. We support feminism, LGBTQ, Indigenous, Afro-Brazilian, minority and immigrant rights.

Another banger. Unfortunately, it has very few english articles, so I would recommend it if you are willing to use google translator to translate the whole website like this. These guys are ML, Brazilwire isn’t, but it’s still great
