If you continue to tip you’re perpetuating a system of sexism, racism, and classism that ultimately harms everyone involved including yourself, as the quality of worker will go down as tipping does not favor quality of work, just attractiveness.

Ideally, you would just not interact with racist, sexist, and classist businesses that allow tipping. There are restaurants that discourage or outright stated not to tip the staff, and I’m sure there’s bars that have adopted the same by now. If there’s not any around you, go without.

If everyone stopped tipping, the people who rely on those tips for food/shelter/medicine would suffer. There is no guarantee that reform would follow.

If a small subset of people stopped tipping, then the people who rely on it will sometimes come up short, and reform is extremely unlikely to follow.

“Just stop going to bars and restaurants, one of the oldest human activities” is a pretty tall order.

Edit: I don’t think any of the myriad bars and restaurants I’ve been to in NYC have had anti-tipping policies.

The problems you describe are real. Your solution is somewhere between ineffective and counter productive.

Folks should organize and demand fair wages or shared ownership or similar.

The problem is those relying on tips that are successful will not see the problem until they’re too old to be taken seriously by the hit new generation that replaced them. Sure, the ideal solution is the workers wake up, but they have no material reason to if a majority of them are successful specifically due to that discrimination.

It’s a microcosm of greater oppression dynamics, one that in order to self improve would require those benefiting to take the side of those being oppressed, only that’s not likely as even moreso than large oppressive systems, those benefiting have absolutely no motivation to improve until they are no longer favored and thus are powerless.

Therefore the solution has to come from the consumer of the services. There are plenty of places to eat that don’t require tips, and only old people and the extremely rich go to bars, simply choose better. Yes those currently working will suffer like those they push out of the industry for being too black or too ugly, but they can always model or strip or learn a different skill.

and only old people and the extremely rich go to bars,

What? That is not a factual statement without some extremely non standard definitions of old and rich.

Yes those currently working will suffer like those they push out of the industry for being too black or too ugly, but they can always model or strip or learn a different skill.

And I gather that’s a sacrifice you’re willing to let them make. Do you work for tips? Do any of your friends? Do you have any personal skin in this game?

I think there’s some small amount of common ground between us, but there’s also a hefty divide.
