I am referring to performance issues like lag, frame stutters, choppy rendering, and poor frame pacing.

I try to debug the issue; then I optimize my configuration before concluding that it requires extra hardware (which usually results in me giving up). For me, enabling Vsync and setting a frame rate limit usually helps a ton with display issues.

I don’t like using game boosters like gamemode; the game should be able to perform without any external addons, and game boosters interfere with the game’s ability to regulate its performance.

If the game has a internal resolution scaler, I’ll run the game at a lower internal resolution like 900p or even 720p on some games. The UI stays an appropriate size but runs better.

Even without a resolution scaler, running a game at 900p often isn’t that bad.

And if you’re running Windows games on Linux with Proton / Wine-GE you can use FSR with every game, even if it doesn’t support it natively! There might be some issues though, like blurry UI, etc.

Playing ASCII, pixelart-based, indie, or pre-2010 games. It’s hard to have performance issues with games that require so few resources. As a bonus, such games are often very affordable. It’s not a solution for all types of gamers, but it’s worth considering.
