There are already loads of “selfhosted” communities, mostly focusing on software run on VPS.

I think it would be nice to have a community here that is focusing a bit more on the Homebrewserver.club ethos and cool stuff like off-grid solar powered websites.

Do they focus on software run on VPS?

Not exclusively, but that seems to be the more common discussion topic than hosting on your own low-powered hardware from a home ISP connection.

Do you have a solar hosting setup? If yes I’d be very interested what it looks like!

I am working on it slowly. I already got most of the stuff for the servers themselves, but I had to postpone installing the solarpanels to next year most likely.

PicoPSUs are nice for turning normal x86 PCs into 12V battery powered ones.

Wow I didn’t even know this existed. Are you using x86 architecture? Why not a raspberry pi, they’re so easy to use and use very little power.

I also use some ARM SBCs, but the Odroid ones are better for running on 12V batteries as they mostly do not use USB 5v for power-suppy, but barrel-jacks with a wider range of voltage support.

x86 can also be quite power efficient and for some stuff, especially if you want to connect a lot of SATA drives it has the better support. 2.5" HDDs from laptops are very power-efficient and work nicely for such purposes.

Ah I see. You seem to have quite a lot of understanding and equipment for this task! Please keep us in the know how your setup is developing.

Sure, but it will take some time ;)

don’t worry

Okay I didn’t understand those communities to be like that. Anyways, maybe let’s just make the slrpnk selfhosting community with this focus? It would make sense, wouldn’t it?

The mod @ex_06@slrpnk.net could easily add a rule that discussion here should be around the hardware requirements equivalent to a raspberry pi and a home internet connection.

I vote for renaming this community to “homebrewserver” :)

Oh and you can make me a mod here.

Let’s keep it selfhosting for now, just because there should still be people arriving and so it’s the broadest term!

The most solarpunk version would be community hosting, but some solarpunks wouldn’t discover the selfhosting world if this community was only for that. Also, the issues and discussions would be similar :P

Something more correct is “tech stack autonomy”, but that’s not a cool name lol

In the meanwhile, you are already mod

Thanks. Yes the name doesn’t matter so much indeed.
