Ever since we’ve turned it on, we’ve been troll free. They don’t even do the work of making up fake answers.
Might be worth switching it off for the refugee wave, and doing cleanup afterwards. User retention is crucial right now, and you want to capitalise on the immediate excitement of signing up to a new platform. (Assuming, ofc, that there’s semi effective spam control in place—I recall Hexbear had to shut down registrations occasionally due to wrecker spam and lack of effective tools.)
out of the large volley of applicants, only one applicant said they were unhappy having to fill out an application. of course, there are plenty more who saw that we have membership applications and decided not to join, but I’d rather have them pass on us than have to deal with the onslaught of trolls who will waste everyone’s time posting the worst stuff you can imagine.
Really, that’s a small price to pay for the sanity and mental health of our admins and moderators.
yeah, we have a few admins (myself included) who are very active, so it’s not all that difficult or time consuming for us to do. But it is still tedious.
