Cities are pouring millions of dollars into making safe bike lanes to enable more of us to use a bicycle for transportation. But there’s an underappreciated barrier for many people – there’s no safe place to store their bike at home. This can be a huge problem for millions of people who live in smaller apartments and flats where bike parking wasn’t considered when it was built, and for millions of people in newer buildings where expensive car parking is often mandated but storage for bikes is not considered at all.

I love the idea of a gated off area for bicycles in buildings and have heard soo many stories of bicycles being stolen from these areas. I think if my buildling had gated bike parking, I’d still walk it up the stairs because I am paranoid.

My city has started to install bike locker type things in the streets to combat this exact problem. It is basically a bank of bars to lock your bike to with a large roof section on gas struts. So anyone who has a key can open up the roof section, unlock their bike and leave. There are some as well that are like small one bike sheds almost but these dont seem as popular, probably because of the increased space usage.
