I’m really enjoying the switch to Lemmy. This feels more like the late 90s/early 00s when computers still required some work to use. I know it might seem gatekeeper-y but it’s just nice to know the people here really care about how we interact and what we give up by using the intrusive commerical platforms. Thoughts?

I’m fully with you. It feels great to be on a platform where:
- the site owner isn’t some billionaire CEO. they’re a regular person
- no algorithms or weird manipulations. It’s just up and down votes here.
- people are genuine. No one trying to “game the algorithm” or “amass karma”.
Absolutely, no one is attempting to catch the SEO dragon here. I love it.
I just can’t get over the lack of ads and just utter noise on the other platforms. Coming here is like the quiet in a car after leaving a rock concert. It’s refreshing.
Totally agree. I’ve been using Lemmy in one way or another since about late 2019 and I remember thinking “this is like the old internet”.
I made a Mastadon account once Elmo bought Twitter. I didn’t even realize this was a thing until that recently. I love being surprised on the internet when a new idea comes along.
@seahorse @InevitableWaffles this is what the fediverse which contains mastodon lemmy and so much more fun software is all about welcome and have fun.
It definitely feels like it, like when centralized platforms ruled by huge multinational corporations didn’t rule the Internet. People have become fed up and started to run their own infrastructure. The experience here feels different, no rule by algorithms and man-baby billionaires. It’s like the Internet is once again a wasteland and we are the settlers.
Honestly I think the smaller community is way better. I don’t care if it sounds gate keepery but If the average Joe thinks thinks the sign up is too complex (it isn’t), then I think it’ll just lead to better conversation because the only people on here want to make an effort to understand and use the platform.
I wonder how long it will be until we hit our Eternal September. Of course I’m sure the users who were here before the Reddit API fiasco will call this that moment.
I guess I’ll just keep running on to the new service.
