Mining is a big industry in Canada, there’s a part of it I don’t like too much. It’s one thing for companies to use our lands for precious minerals and resources, I don’t take issue with. It’s another for foreign multinational companies to headquarters in Canada solely to benefit from lax regulations, then from there exploit other nations’ territories. In my view the latter is Canadian-in-name-only.

I take issue with the genocide that Canada is currently committing against First Nations and ramming pipelines through their lands by force. Canada occupies lots of unceded territory and it’s time Canadians acknowledged that. The territory Canada occupies must be decolonized.

Canada being the 2nd largest country in the world means laying claim to a lot of territory that wasn’t originally theirs, native rights are a problem for the governments of countries founded by colonialism. I think Trudeau and many Canadians have done a lot of acknowledging. I’m not sure how much that helps when many reserves which Indigenous tribes have been forcibly relocated to receive 2nd class care.

Back to the topic at hand: For any mining project, there should be due consideration and care for the Indigenous that live in that area, and they should also be entitled to a portion of the benefits from that resource extraction.

At least within Canada, our government can be held to account with what we do here. It’s when companies registered in Canada wreck havoc on other nations, we can’t hold them accountable as well because of the lax rules, and exploited workers in those nations have little to no say about it to change our laws.

I agree that it should be easier to hold companies accountable within Canada, unfortunately we don’t even do a good job of that. Our government encourages bad practices, and even uses public funds to clean up after the companies instead of making them pay for it. Of course, abuses these companies do abroad are even worse. I think the whole industry should be nationalized and held to a much higher standard.
