8M | mod | Removed Comment > veganism is an ethical principle.
According to wiki "Veganism is the practice of abstaining from the use of animal products, particularly in diet"
Which means it is a diet. But feel free to update the Wikipedia page by @ZafiraHUN@mander.xyzreason: omni apologist |

8M | mod | Removed Comment I've been vegetarian for over 20 years. It is definitely easier than being vegan imo. Ideally I would love to have my own hens for eggs. Dairy cows would be a significant investment. If only all animals were treated ethically we wouldn't have such concerns. 1Y | mod | Removed Comment It can be in some cases. Plus constantly cooking, cleaning, washing pots and pans, cleaning the kitchen counter tops can be tedious and time consuming, even if you are meal prepping. Cheap fast food is an option a lot of the time for poor families.
I am primarily vegan and do eat rice, beans and spaghetti so I see the savings there. But I need lots of calories so I also cook beyond burgers frequently. by Geotechlandreason: no non-vegans allowed |

1Y | mod | Removed Comment > Guess what’s already being used for the vast majority of farmland now.
That's an excuse to make things worse? I knew vegans were entitled narcissists, but wow.
> I don’t see how it would get worse when
I already explained that in the first comment. The only natural fertilizers come from farm animals. If there are no farm animals, then there is no natural fertilizer. If people don't eat the animals (or at least consume their products... eggs, milk, etc) then there are no farm animals.
The math's pretty simple here. Veganism is pro-fossil-fuel-fertilizers.
> Not to mention, if we reduce our required farmland by 75%, we could actually start doing large scale permaculture, which would allow us to grow food while reforesting
Yes. With fertilizers. You don't get large-scale anything in agriculture without boosting things for the little planties. If they could do it on their own, you'd have to wait for them to get around to it, and that's a few millennia of growth. But people tend to starve far sooner. Not to mention that you aren't going to feed 8 billion people with crusty hazelnuts and saskatoonberries. The bulk of the food that would still need to be grown is grain, it being the only remaining staple crop and all, with maybe legumes picking up 4 or 5%.
Grains are fertilizer intensive.
Or maybe the plan always has been famine-genocide for you people. Who knows. by @DPUGT2 |
1Y | mod | Removed Comment If everyone were vegan, then the world has to rely on expensive fossil-fuel based fertilizers forever after. I mean, one could make the argument that if you at least endorsed dairy products, then there would be room for animal fertilizers... but apparently that's rape or slavery or something.
Once those farm animals were extinct, either farmland would have to expand as soil nutrient depletion turned fields into wastelands, or you'd have to go full-in on Haber-Bosch. by @DPUGT2 reason: no non-vegans on the vegan sub |

1Y | mod | Removed Comment This is straight up false. And i see vegans share it again and again no matter how many times its been debunked. Grass coevolved with ruminant animals. Without the cows grazing the area would be infertile. Unless you can replace them with another ruminant.
Most cows in the US come from family farms that eat only inedible grass their whole life until right before slaughter. They then might be fed corn to fatten them up.
Cows that are fed grain products are mostly fed the parts of the plant humans can't eat. For example the stalk of the corn which while technically it is 80% of the corn its 80% of the corn you can't eat. The shells of soy beans ect.
You absolutely need cows to help recycle nutrients for humans. Taking them out of the equation would feed less people. Fish have an important role to play to.
Remember cows eat grass that grows where crops cannot. You don't always have the option to replace grass with wheat or soy. The ground isn't nutritious enough.
While you can make moral arguments for being a vegan, reducing farmland is not a valid reason to go vegan. Mono crops destroy soil. Cows replenish soil quickly. by @normalwhat reason: no non-vegans on the vegan sub. |
